For ever-returning flowers: successfully multiplying geraniums
First of all, this article is about the Geranium pelargonium, whereas the propagation of the Cranesbill (Geranium) is covered in another article. The Pelargonium originating from South Africa - here for the sake of simplicity called Geranium - love warmth and sun and should overwinter in frost-prone areas in the cool greenhouse or conservatory. For this reason, many balcony gardeners cultivate the flowering plants for only one season, then buy new ones in the spring. However, this is not necessary because you can multiply your geraniums with little effort.

The easiest way to propagate your geranium vegetatively over cuttings. In this way, you can also multiply beautiful plants, because cuttings are clones of the mother plant and this therefore completely the same. The best time to cut the offshoot is the late summer / early fall, ergo the months of August and September.
In spring, plant the young plants in a larger pot and gradually harden them.
Share perennial geraniums
Little is known that pelargoniums can be multiplied by division. However, this is only possible with older plants from the age of four to five years. Sharing is best done with the beginning of the spring shoot as soon as the first fresh shoots show up - this is usually the case in March or April. It is best to combine this with repotting the plant, gently pulling it and its roots apart with your fingers. Subsequently, the pieces are planted individually and poured vigorously.
Propagate geraniums over seeds
Growing geraniums from seeds - either collected or purchased - is great fun. Sowing should take place in January, but at the latest in February of each year, so you can enjoy the flowers of your self-grown geraniums during the summer.
Tips
When propagating cuttings, be careful not to use soft and still green shoots. These tend to rot and are therefore less suitable.
