Untreated wood not only smells wonderful, it also invites you to touch thanks to its special feel. However, it is not a good idea to leave the rain, snow and sun-exposed garden shed completely raw. It would weather relatively quickly, mold could spread and the material would be unsightly. With oils and waxes, the beauty of the wood can be emphasized. But is it enough to just oil a garden shed or is a paint job the better choice?
Why resort to natural means?
Oils and waxes form a natural bond with the material wood. The protective layer, however, unlike varnish, does not seal the pores; the material can continue to breathe. Also, oils and waxes do not give off any harmful exhalations. They emphasize the beauty of the grain and convey a very natural look.
Ideal for the interior
This makes natural means the best choice for the interior of the arbor. As a rule, the indoor climate is better and more pleasant.
Oiling is not enough to protect against weathering
However, the protective effect for outdoor use is not sufficient for sensitive woods. If you do not want to use paints, you should better use naturally resistant wood species such as larch. This does not require additional weather protection. Larch, for example, forms a beautiful, silver-gray patina untreated and at the same time offers a high resistance to the natural aging process of wood.
How is oiled?
For the remedies to penetrate well, the right application is important.
- Vacuum the resulting wood dust between each sanding cycle and water again.
Tips
Timber must be re-oiled regularly, depending on how much the surface is used. For indoor walls, the treatment is recommended about every two years.
