The right care for the robust forsythia
Forsythia are also called Goldilocks because of their pretty yellow flowers. They grow in many gardens and are considered harbingers of spring. The shrubs are durable and undemanding. You only need a little care. This is how to properly treat the forsythia.
Do forsythia have to be cast?
Watering is only necessary if the leaves hang limp. The soil must never dry out completely or be too moist. You need to water container plants more often.
Do Goldilocks need regular fertilizer supplies?
Forsythia can do without fertilizer. If you put some ripe compost in the planting hole before planting, that's enough.
For forsythia in the tub occasional fertilizer does not hurt. It is even better to repot the plant in the spring.
When will forsythia be cut?
Forsythia must be cut at least every three years. In doing so, cut down all old shoots and clear out the shrub.
An autumn cut is not advisable as it removes too many flower-bearing branches.
Which diseases and pests can occur?
Forsythia are almost resistant to disease if the location is right. In wet soils, fungal diseases occur. The branches wither and the flowers do not unfold. The roots also rot with waterlogging.
The only pest that occurs on forsythia is bugs. They suck out the still rolled up leaves and leave ugly holes. On the other hand, you can not do much. The plant but hardly harms.
Does forsythia need winter protection?
Forsythia is absolutely hardy. They survive even the lowest freezing temperatures. Winter protection is only necessary if forsythia is not planted in spring, but only in autumn.
When taking care of the tub, you should place the pot on styrofoam or other insulating material and protect it from frost by means of a foil to be on the safe side.
If the temperature drops again during flowering, the flowers will freeze to death. Unfortunately, this can not be prevented.
Tips & Tricks
The forsythia is a hybrid. Their flowers contain neither pollen nor nectar, so the spring flowers are uninteresting for bees and other insects. In natural gardens, therefore, the planting of forsythia is omitted.
