The optimal care for lilac
Lilac is a real feast for the eye, especially during its flowering period, when the flower spikes, which can reach up to 30 centimeters long, open their innumerable, small flowers. Careful care is needed to ensure that you enjoy the shrub or tree for a long time, with lilac growing practically on its own at the right location.
Should you water lilac? If so, when and how often?
A planted, older and established at its location lilac you have to water occasionally only in longer dry periods. Otherwise, a watering only in young, freshly planted specimens and cultivated in pots lilacs necessary.
When and how should you best fertilize lilac?
Fertilize your planted lilac once or twice a year with mature compost and horn shavings, which you carefully prune into the root disk and in early summer. At some locations, fertilization with lime may be useful. Pothards are supplied with a liquid container fertilizer between April and September, but should contain only little nitrogen.

Which diseases affect the lilac more often?
Lilac is particularly sensitive to fungal diseases, which is why you should close all possible entry gates or keep as small as possible. This includes doing a pruning on a warm and sunny day so they can dry quickly - using sharp and disinfected tools. Mildew occurs particularly frequently, as well as the so-called "lilac epidemic". In the case of the dreaded Vertlillium wilt, only pruning and relocation will help.
Which pests can frolic on the lilac?
Relatively common is the Fliederminiermotte or Fliedermotte to be found, the presence of which you first notice of irregular, brown and withered leaf spots.
Is lilac hardy? How best to overwinter it?
Planted lilac is sufficiently hardy and therefore does not require any special winter protection. Only specimens cultured in pots should receive one so that their roots do not freeze. For this purpose, you can wrap the planter about with a fleece. When the above-ground parts of the plant freeze, the lilac usually drifts out of the root.
Tips
Unfortunately, lilac reacts very sensitively to a planting of its root disk, which is why it should remain free. Also a mulching with bark mulch is to be seen critically, since this removes the soil nutrients (above all nitrogen).
