An overview of the types of foxglove
In Germany, three types of thimble are native. Worldwide there are about 25 species and tons of different varieties. Here are the most important species, which are important for the gardener, at a glance.
The best known species: the red foxglove
Digitalis purpurea is the best known species in Germany. It is biennial and can grow up to 1.30 m tall. Their flowers are purple to purplish pink in their original state. In the throat of the flowers appear white-pink spots. The varieties 'Apricot' and 'Alba' are considered widespread.
The big flowered thimble
Digitalis grandiflora is characterized by in comparison to its conspecific large flowers. This species also convinces with its long flowering time and longevity. Unlike the red foxglove, which is biennial, this species is perennial.
The large-flower thimble reaches an average size between 50 and 100 cm. Its flowers are pale yellow in color and drawn with a dark grain. Gardeners like to use this specimen for planting larger groups.
The yellow thimble
The third native species in this country is Digitalis lutea. It can grow up to 70 cm. So she is considered petite. The flowers are pale yellow, small and less persistent than those of the previous species.
