A fire basket or fire bowl is not considered an open fire
Is it possible to create a fireplace in your own garden?
Many people have wonderful memories from their childhood, in which on cuddly summer evenings the campfire crackled and you fried a sausage or stick bread over the flames. Such experiences are nowadays not so easy, because an open fireplace usually requires a permit.
For open fires, obtaining a permit is required
Whether or not it is possible to create a fireplace in your own garden depends on the specific regulations of your community. The regulations differ locally or regionally, but in the vast majority of cases require approval - at least as long as it is a so-called open fire. A fire in a fire bowl or a fire basket with a diameter of less than one meter, however, is not considered an open fire and may therefore be operated without permission. For any other fireplace, however, get yourself at your local regulatory office one such. If you run a campfire without a permit, you are facing severe fines. Mostly, permits are issued only at Easter time (for the Easter bonfire) or at certain times of the year.
Collect wood only with wood collection certificate
As soon as you have obtained the permit, of course, you also need wood for your campfire. Collecting wood is no problem as long as you are looking for your own property - in forests, parks, etc., picking up branches and twigs is a punishable offense, not to mention sawing or cutting wooden parts still on the tree. So that you do not get into trouble because of wood theft, you can apply for a so-called wood collection certificate from your community. This costs only a few euros, but is limited in time.
What rules you should follow for the campfire in the garden
You also have to follow certain rules when lighting and entertaining an open fire. If you violate them, the granted permit can be withdrawn. The same is true when neighbors and other residents complain.
Tips
Always lay firewood just before lighting, or layer it before lighting - hedgehogs and other small animals often hide in such piles of wood.
