Repot the fig trees properly
A fig tree can be maintained in the same planter for a relatively long time. If the growth of the fig slows down and if only a few fruits are left over, you should transfer the wood to a larger bucket.
Only repot when the substrate is completely rooted
Although the roots of the fig can reach an enormous size, but rather grow slowly, it is sufficient to repot the plant about every two to three years. Make sure that the roots of the tree are not damaged when being removed from the old planter.
Now consider the potted bale exactly: If this is not fully rooted, it is sufficient to exchange the old substrate for fresh. Gently remove the non-rooted soil first.
The right time
If possible, transplant fig trees at the beginning of the growing season in early spring. Avoid using poorly thriving plants as repotting the plant is a major stress. Instead, try to get rid of the cause of unsatisfactory growth first, and fight pests or diseases with appropriate means.
Popping the fig
If the root ball is stuck in the planter, there are different methods to solve it:
If all else fails, you can gently drive between the flower pot and root ball with a long knife. After that, a helper gently pulls the pot from the root ball while holding the fig directly above the ground.
The right substrate
Figs need permeable and nutrient-rich soil with a high percentage of mineral constituents. As admixture to conventional balcony plants or potting soil are suitable:
Important: A drainage layer
Figs are very sensitive to waterlogging and should be avoided at all costs. Therefore, cover the large holes of the planter with potsherds and then fill a few centimeters thick layer of expanded clay balls in the vessel. This ensures that excess irrigation water runs well. At the same time, the clay stores a small supply of water and ensures the ventilation of the root ball from below.
Tips & Tricks
If roots show up in the drain hole of the pot, this is not a sign that the fig has to be repotted. Take the fig out of the pot - if the roots have not completely filled the substrate, you can wait a while before repotting it. In this case, replace only the old soil with fresh substrate.
