Why should I fence my beds?

A fence around the garden in this country is a fairly common sight, but individual beds are rarely fenced. But sometimes there are good reasons to protect either the bed or small children.

For example, a fence around the garden pond is recommended so that playing children can not fall into it. If you have pets, the fence protects the plants from being nibbled and dug up by free-roaming rabbits, or when the bed is being used by your dog as a dog's loo.

Which fence is suitable for my bed?

In principle, you can use any fence within your garden, but often there are low fences as a delimitation. However, the height and the design depends on what you want to achieve. In the trade you will find various fence elements made of wood or wire mesh.

If you want to protect your children from poisonous plants or falling into the pond, then the fence should be so high that they can not easily climb over it, the same applies to dogs. Rabbits, on the other hand, need more of a demarcation that reaches close to the ground and is narrow enough that they can not crawl through.

In a natural or cottage garden, a wicker fence fits very well, but it is usually not a big obstacle for children or animals. Wire mesh is indeed effective, but rarely really decorative.

Alternatives to the fence

Not always a fence has to be built as a boundary, alternatively you may also plant a hedge. Both flowering and evergreen plants such as the boxwood are suitable for this. Even a small wall, for example made of field stones, is conceivable as a bedding border, alternatively a series of laid out stones.

Tips

The protection of your children should always be in the foreground, the decorative effect is only in second place in this case.
