Which root barriers are suitable for the vinegar tree?
To stop the vigorous roots of the vinegar tree, a normal pond liner is not enough. The material must be strong and thick so that the roots can not drill holes.
Flat root system
Vinegar trees develop a highly branched root system, consisting of a main root and numerous lateral roots. The main root can reach up to two meters deep into the earth. The lateral root system runs flat through the upper layers in the ground. It can move up to ten meters from the mother plant and drive out in other places. This characteristic makes the vinegar tree a dreaded ornamental shrub, because an uncontrolled spread displaces the native flora.
Unsuitable measures
To prevent the spread, root locks help. These are buried directly in the planting of shrubs in the soil and represent a propagation barrier for the roots. Vinegar trees develop strong lateral roots. Therefore, a conventional pond liner is not enough. With the root tip, the bushes drill holes in the material and overcome the barrier.
There is also a risk with clay vessels, because the material can become brittle due to the moisture in the substrate. Small successes also achieve too small vials. The fast-growing trees can quickly break the buckets with their powerful foothills.
Suitable root barriers
Choose a sufficiently large stone vessel with no bottom or a rain barrel, where you cut off the lower end. After a few years, the vinegar tree has penetrated the area within the barrier. Due to the lack of space, many shrubs and look ugly. Such woody plants can be easily rejuvenated by cuttings. A high-pressure polyethylene film is a stable alternative to vessels. It should be at least two millimeters thick.
Advantages of the HDPE film:
It is difficult to retrieve a rhizome barrier later in the soil. You must cut through all the foothills in the run-up and excavate, so that they do not expel again. To sink closed vessels, either dig up the entire rhizome or place the barrier over the tree. Both methods damage the tree, which promotes the development of shoots and shoots. HDPE film can also be subsequently laid in the ground.
