Plant peanuts in the garden - this is how to grow!
Despite the lower temperatures in Germany, peanut cultivation is also relatively easy here. With the right seed, you can harvest your own fruits for roasting or cooking in September. The prerequisite for a rich harvest is a constant soil temperature of 18 degrees.
Peanuts need a lot of heat
So that peanuts germinate and later develop new fruits in the garden, they need a constant soil temperature, which must not fall below 18 degrees.
It takes between three and four months for the peanuts to be ripe.
If you do not have a greenhouse, grow the plants indoors.
So you sow peanuts
As a seed you can theoretically use all peanut kernels that have not been roasted or otherwise treated.
It is better, however, to get seed in the specialized trade. There you also get robust varieties that cope better with cooler temperatures.
Pull the peanut plants into the house in March. Otherwise, it could be that the fruits do not mature in time before the frost starts.
Grow peanuts in the field
Once the soil in the garden has warmed up to at least 18 degrees and no frost is expected, you can plant the peanuts in the field.
Good, nutritious garden soil is sufficient. The location must not be too humid. Around the plant, loosen the soil a bit, so that the inflorescences can anchor well in the ground. There then form the fruits.
During the growing season you will only spars the plants sparingly. Every two to four weeks give some vegetable fertilizer to fortify the peanut plants.
Harvest from September
The peanuts are ripe when the herb has turned yellow. Pull the whole plant out of the ground.
Before you roast the peanuts or use them for cooking, allow them to dry on the plant for some time.
Tips & Tricks
Peanuts can also be grown without first removing the hard shell. Then the germination process takes longer. The brown skin around the pits, on the other hand, must not be removed because the peanut may not expel.
