Every healthy, strong offshoot has the potential for a high-yielding strawberry plant. Follow our instructions and transform the appropriate tendrils into a new plant after the harvest in a few simple steps. That's how it's done.
Select and mark candidates
Although strawberry shrubs of the same variety have identical genetic material, they nevertheless differ in their earning power. The offshoots of a richly bearing mother plant thus have a more efficient growth power than the tendrils of weak strawberry plants. Keep an eye on your favorites throughout the harvest season and mark them with a highly visible wooden stick.
From the offshoot to the plant - this is how it's done step by step
In July is the best time to attack multiplication by offshoot. The harvest is either in full swing or already over. This year's crop winners have emerged and could be marked with a clear conscience. How to proceed:
Experienced hobby gardeners scratch the offshoot with a razor blade lightly where it comes into the ground. The clay pot is now completely buried, so that the pot wall receives continuous ground contact. If a shoot is behind the offshoot, it will be cut off. In the last step, pour everything well and keep the area constantly moist in the following weeks.
Transplant in late summer
While the offshoot continues to be supplied by its mother plants, an independent root system develops in the clay pot. Feel a firm resistance by pulling gently on the shoot, the development is sufficiently advanced for the next step.
If you have selected several offshoots for propagation, consider a planting distance of 25-30 centimeters and a row spacing of 60 centimeters. By the winter, the young strawberry plants will be able to establish themselves well in the warm soil in order to prosper magnificently next year. During this time, make sure you have sufficient water supply.
Tips & Tricks
When assessing the earning power of a mother plant, experienced hobby gardeners can not be fooled by the growth rate of the tendrils. The more productive a strawberry plant, the later its offshoots develop.
