Iceberg lettuce - Lactuca sativa var. Capitata
The iceberg lettuce, also called Krachsalat, is a further breeding of the well-known lettuce. Many hobby gardeners like to plant it, because it can be harvested almost all year round. It forms dense and compact heads with crisp leaves.

The iceberg lettuce can be preferred on the windowsill or in the greenhouse from February to April. You can plant it in the bed when the first two leaves have formed and there is no risk of frost.
From mid-March a culture in the cold frame is possible, which should be covered at night.

To harvest
It takes about eight to twelve weeks to harvest. It makes sense to sow the lettuce in stages until July or planting, then it can be harvested into fresh until October.
When harvested, the entire head of lettuce is cut just above the ground, if possible early in the morning.
The iceberg lettuce can be stored in the freezer compartment for up to two weeks. Well chilled, it is particularly crisp. Before preparation, the outer leaves are removed. It can be prepared like lettuce, or combined with fried bacon and boiled ham. Similarly, the fresh iceberg lettuce sweet fruity or savory ingredients can be prepared.
Tips & Tricks
Fertilizers are not needed if the garden bed is well prepared with compost. Alternatively, it can be poured with stinging nettle.
