Create a hedge of ivy - that's how it works
Ivy is an evergreen, frost hardy self-climber, which is ideal if you want to create a hedge for privacy. Before you decide for ivy in the garden, but you should think twice. The robust plant can hardly be removed later.
The right trellis help
Ivy always needs a climbing aid. It can be an existing wall, a wooden fence or chain link fence. It is important that the scaffolding is stable and gives the anchoring roots a chance to catch themselves on the ground.
In the case of walls, it should be noted that the supply roots of the ivy can damage the masonry. You should not green an already dilapidated wall with ivy.
Wire mesh fencing is very often used as the basis for a hedge of ivy. Make sure that the fence is stable, because over time, ivy develops a high weight. You may need to retighten the tension wires from time to time so that the hedge does not hang down.
How to create a hedge of ivy
Ivy can be planted throughout the garden year. When planting in the fall, you should protect the young plants with a mulch cover from frost and dehydration.
The floor must be loose. Waterlogging is essential to avoid. If the soil is too moist you should first apply a drainage system.
Place the ivy plants at a distance of 35 to 45 centimeters from the trellis. In the first years you still have to tie the tendrils by hand.
Care of the ivy corner
You should cut an ivy corner regularly. Otherwise it will be too high. In addition, it should occasionally be lighted to prevent fungi and pests. Remove waxy tendrils from the ground.
Ivy does not tolerate drought well. The hedge must therefore be watered regularly, especially in the first years. Pour it even in winter, when the soil is very dry.
