Caution when planting the poisonous Dickmännchens
If you are looking for a ground cover for shady locations, you may be in the right place with the big male or the ysander (Pachysandra terminalis). However, you should plant the herbaceous plant only where there are no small children and pets. Dickmännchen is unfortunately poisonous.

Dickmännchen, mostly under the name Ysander in the trade, belongs to the boxwood plants. Just like these, the big man is poisonous, in all parts of the plant.
Dickmännchen contains, among other things, the steroidal alkaloids pachystermin A and pachysamin A, which can cause serious poisoning in large quantities.
Especially the berries, which develop from the inconspicuous flowers, are appealing to young children. If there are children or animals in the house, you should therefore better avoid planting Ysander.
Tips
A non-toxic groundcover, which is also disease resistant and suitable for shady locations such as Pachysandra terminalis, is the Chinese blackberry (Rubus tricolor). You can safely pull the plants in any garden.
