Cat owners ask each house for the plant, whether it contains toxins that can be dangerous to the four-legged friends. You do not have to worry about the Calathea or Korbmarante as a houseplant. This ornamental plant is not toxic to cats.
Calathea is not toxic to cats
The calathea is also called "arrowroot". That is why many pet owners assume that the Korbmarante is poisonous, because they think of the notorious arrow poison of South America.
The concern, however, is unfounded. Calathea is non-toxic, in no part of the plant. The name "arrowroot" on the contrary indicates that the plant can be used to gain antidote to the arrow poison.
In the past, Calathea was even used for medical purposes. This is now outdated.
Calathea is very susceptible to pest infestation
While the toxicity is not a problem in the attitude of a calathea, the care makes certain demands on the plant friend. Especially pests such as spider mites like to make their way over the Korbmarante.
They then occur more often when the humidity is too low. Spray the plant regularly with low-calcium water to prevent spider mite infestation.
If pests have occurred, rinse the basket edge under the shower. You should refrain from using chemical control agents, especially if you count cats or dogs as a family.
Tips
If your cat has calmed down on the calathea, it can vomit, although the basket marant is not poisonous. That is no cause for concern. Some four-legged friends eat the leaves to cleanse the stomach.
