When is the heyday of the blood beech?
It takes up to 30, sometimes even 40 years, until the beech flowers for the first time. The flowers are inconspicuous and play no role in garden design. In many years, no flowers are formed.
Flowering begins with the leaves
When the beech leaves are leafy in spring, the small, very inconspicuous flowers also appear. The flowering period starts in April and only takes a few weeks.
The flowers are very small and tapering at the end. They have a slightly reddish color.
In the fall, in September and October, the fruits from the fertilized flowers ripen. They consist of a prickly shell enclosing two to a maximum of four beechnuts.
Tips
If you plant blood beech as a hedge, the trees usually will not bloom at all. Due to the regular pruning almost all later inflorescences are removed. Therefore, you can not harvest seeds for propagation from a hive hedge.
