No question: in the spring and in summer in the garden - and thus also in the raised bed - a lot of work to do. However, that does not mean that you can put your feet up in autumn. Instead, the raised bed can be planted with winter-proof vegetables until well into autumn. Also, the fall is the right time for the new creation or filling a raised bed.
Create a raised bed and fill it up
If you want to create a classically layered compost raised bed, this is best done in autumn. The reason for this is simple: The rotting process causes such a freshly created bed to collapse quickly, which, if already planted, has a negative impact on the expected harvest. In contrast, if you plant it in the autumn, the rotting process takes place over the winter months - and you only need to fill the bed with fresh potting soil before planting in the spring.

In addition, the raised bed can be planted in the fall even with frost-compatible vegetables.From July or August, put late broccoli varieties, kale, endives, spinach, lamb's lettuce and radicchio into the bedding areas that will be released. In summer, these can be sowed directly into the bed, but better is the cultivation of young plants. These can partly be planted in September or October, but in many cases the harvest will not take place until spring. With a cold frame or greenhouse attachment or a simple foil tunnel you also ensure pleasant growth temperatures and protect the young plants from possible late frosts. Clear the winter patch by February at the latest, as preparation for the new season begins.
Rummaging and winterizing
Of course, you can clear the raised bed completely in autumn and winterize it for the cold season. If the bed is completely unplanted, cover it with semi-mature compost, leaves and / or straw to protect against moisture and nutrients. If the bed is covered with perennial, frost-hardy plants, cover them with leaves and / or brushwood. Not enough winter-proof plants - which include, for example, many Mediterranean herbs or artichokes - should, however, be excavated and winterized in a cool and frost-free place.
Tips
When you first plant the raised bed, you can use the raised bed throughout the fall and throughout the winter as a composter for finely cut garden and kitchen waste. Then fill in fresh potting soil in spring.
