Build rain cover for a flower box yourself - That's how it works
Roaring rain causes petunias, geraniums and other balcony beauties to hang down in a sullen and limp manner. On the other hand, if the balcony box has a protective roof, even a long-lasting landfall does not affect the flowers. Find out how to build a rain cover for your flower box yourself.
Material and tool list
In order for the rain canopy to fulfill its task perfectly, the height of the corner posts must be matched to the maximum height of the planting. According to this dimension, have the 4 wooden posts cut at the hardware store and tapered at the lower ends. The length of the wooden slats for the roof rack will be tailored according to the length and width of the flower box.
Instructions for assembly
Insert the wooden posts with the pointed end into the 4 corners of the flower box. Then screw the 2 long and 2 short wooden slats together using the angles to form a rectangular roof rack. While a helping hand stabilizes the roof frame, nail the slats to the wooden posts. To optimize the stability, we recommend the installation of two diagonal battens within the roof structure.
If it is a self-made balcony box made of wood, screw the corner posts additionally with the side walls of the plant container.
From the weatherproof, UV-resistant tarpaulin you construct the roof covering. Pull the foil over the rectangular roof rack and staple the edges. To prevent the ends from tearing, leave an overhanging edge of 10 to 15 cm at these points.
Rain cover is not a windbreak
Please keep in mind that a rain cover on the planter increases the wind surface. Strong gusts can catch under the rain cover and take it off its hinges. In the worst case, strong wind tears the entire balcony box with it. Therefore we recommend to give a balcony box with its rain protection as a precaution in case of storm.
Tips
A rain cover on the balcony box does not mean that bottom holes and drainage to protect against waterlogging are now superfluous. Do not fill a planter with substrate until you have spread some potsherds, some chippings or clay granules over the bottom openings as a water-bearing layer.
