Blue winged is hardy
Festuca glauca or Blue winged grass is a ornamental grass with very distinctive, blue to blue-gray stalks and a dense, horstigen growth. The plant is found in Central Europe and Northern Europe primarily in barren, mountainous locations and is therefore used to cold and uncomfortable winters. The blue winglet is very hardy even in the home garden, provided he feels at home.
In winter, additional protection is not necessary
In fact, the blue-winged grass is a very hardy and extremely robust plant that needs no protection even in very cold winters. Nevertheless, many gardeners report that the clumps are frozen back after the cold season and do not drive out again. This is rarely due to the fact that the blue winglet has not tolerated the frost, usually the chosen location is the cause of entering.
Choosing the right location
Although the blue winged is quite robust, but you can take a bad location pretty quickly resent. Ideally, choose a sunny to full sun, dry place with nutrient-poor, sandy to pebbly substrate. In particular, too much moisture causes the grass, so that the stalks quickly begin to rot. Instead, the blue winged grass is wonderfully preserved in a heath or rock garden.

Provided that you ensure a good drainage, Blauschwingel feels very well in the balcony box and can stay there over the winter. The pretty grasses in combination with the also hardy budding heather are especially pretty - a great way to conjure up some colorful blobs on the balcony or terrace even in the cold season. However, you should provide blue duckling in the tub with a light winter protection, because the roots are not sufficiently protected from frost due to the small amount of substrate. For this you can, for example, wrap garden tissue around the planter.
Caution: Do not prune blue pitcher in autumn
In order to get the blue-winged grass healthy over the winter, you must not cut it back in the fall. This will weaken the plant, so that pathogens (especially fungi) have an easy game. In general, it is not recommended to cut back the ornamental grass. Only yellow or faded stems should be plucked.
Tips
If you want to be on the safe side, you can cover the clumps in the winter with a layer of leaves or fir rice.
