At least half a meter distance should be maintained when creating a beech hedge between the individual plants

Create a beech hedge - what should be considered?

A dense, decorative beech hedge is a real eye-catcher on the garden fence. However, not every garden is ideal for beech hedges. Beech trees need a lot of space and are not quite as unpretentious and easy to maintain as for example.

Beech hedge or hornbeam hedge?

Beech trees thrive better on a slightly moist, nutrient-rich soil that is as sunny as possible. The hornbeam is also content with sandy soil and grows even in shadowy locations.

Beech trees are flat-rooters whose root system is very widespread. Hornbeams are deep rooters. The roots are not quite as strong as the beech. In the vicinity of house walls and supply lines, a hornbeam hedge may therefore be more advantageous.

Beech hedges need a lot of space

When planning a beech hedge, you must consider the following:

Keep in mind that you must keep a certain distance to neighboring properties, especially if the hedge is to get higher.

Beech hedges have a width of at least 50 to 70 centimeters. The distance to the property boundary is regulated by the municipality. Inquire better before.

Only young beech hedges can be displaced if necessary. After a few years, find out that the site is unfavorable or the hedge is in the way, only dig up the trees with their roots.

So plant a beech hedge

Stretch a planting string along the intended course of the hedge. Only then is the beech hedge really straight.

Lift out a ditch. Depending on the size of the root ball, it must be at least 40 inches deep. Mix the soil with mature compost to ensure the supply of the young beeches.

Plant the small beech trees at a distance of about 50 centimeters into the trench, so that two pieces come to one meter of hedge length. If the trees are still very small, you can put up to four beech per meter. The hedge is then rather dense. However, after a few years you will have to remove every second tree.

Without care it does not work

Beech hedges should be cut twice a year. Only then they branch out well and do not screw down too much.

Tips

Some species of beech keep the foliage even in winter. These varieties are particularly suitable as a screen. Hornbeams on the other hand lose all leaves.
