Of the non-poisonous bitterwort, also called porcelain roses, there are both hardy and frost-sensitive species. They require different strategies for hibernation. Special features also apply to the winter care of bitter-root in tubs and pots.
Also protect the winter hardy species of bitterwort from excessive wetness. In a very wet and cold area, it may only help to transplant into a pot and overwinter under a protective roof. Frost-susceptible species as well as potted and tub plants are best kept in a cold greenhouse or an unheated winter garden. Do not forget to water your plants, porcelain roses are quite thirsty.
