Store a supply of pears in a cool place
Juicy pears from our own garden taste much more aromatic than imported goods from overseas. So that you can enjoy your own pears even after the harvest season, you should pay attention to some points during storage.
Which pears are storable?
Fully ripe pears quickly turn brown and mushy when stored at room temperature. In addition, not all pear varieties are storable: Early in the year ripening varieties such as William Christ or Gellerts Butterbirne should not leave you longer than a few days. However, pears that only ripen in late autumn can be stored for about two months under the normal conditions. These include, for example, the varieties Conference and Boscs Flaschenbirne.
To be stored for longer periods, the pears must be absolutely fresh and free of injury. You should consume or process a pear with brown spots, damaged peel or fallow fruit immediately. Such fruits would become rotten and moldy after a short time, which can spread to the other stored pears.
Optimum storage conditions for pears
Pears like it
At temperatures around 0 ° C and humidity up to 95%, large-scale pears are stored in low-oxygen warehouses for later sale. Although it is difficult to produce optimum conditions at home, it is possible to approximate them and to create very good storage conditions for the pears.
- Choose the coolest possible storage location. If you do not have a cool basement, a garden shed or a garage can be the right place. Wrap the fruits in plastic bags, such as large freezer bags, and seal them well. This will ensure that the pears are stored in an oxygen-deficient, carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere. Cut two or three slots in the bag to allow water to escape. It should not condense water on the walls of the bag; if this is the case, cut more slits in the bag. Bring the pears to the storage location and check them periodically. If you discover a rotten fruit, all pears in the same bag must be consumed.
Keep pears in the fridge
For a short-term storage of pears, the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator is the right place. There the cool and damp conditions prevail for pears, whereby the fruits remain fresh for much longer than at room temperature. Be careful not to keep the pears with apples in the fridge. Apples emit the ripening gas ethylene, which makes the pears and other fruits ripen and spoil faster.
