To install irrigation for a balcony without water connection
Not every balcony has a directly accessible water connection - especially since these should not be left open when you travel for a few days or even weeks. The risk of water damage is just too high. Fortunately, there are a number of irrigation systems that work without water.
You do not need a water connection for these systems
Each of the systems listed here relies on the proven principle that the plant pulls the water out of a reservoir. This water tank can be small or large, installed directly in the pot or located outside and connected to the planter via a hose.
Planters with water reservoir
If you regularly drive away for a few days, you should put your balcony plants in a planter with a water reservoir right from the start. These are a little more expensive to buy, but they save you the regular watering - and reliably provide your plants, if you travel over the weekend or even for a week.
PET or glass bottles
A well-known as well as proven DIY method of irrigation of potted and tub plants are PET or glass bottles, which are filled with water and put upside down directly into the planter.
Watering cone / ball
This method works better if you previously screw a clay or plastic watering cone onto the bottle. Glassy watering balls work on the same principle, but of course look prettier.
Header tank
Also highly useful are high tank systems in which a larger vessel is filled with water and placed above the planters to be watered. These are connected to the high tank via thin tubes, the water slowly and evenly into the pots and boxes runs due to gravity and the resulting hydrostatic pressure.
Tips
With a battery-powered pump and a timer, you can perfect the high tank system and better adapt to the needs of the plants.
