Even the smallest tree can once become a stately tree - which grows directly in front of the living room window and leaves no light in it, whose roots threaten the foundations of the house or which is simply infested with a wood-decomposing fungus and therefore threatens to fall over. There are several reasons why removing a tree may be necessary. What you should pay attention to in the article below.
Before felling is often the permit
First of all: If a tree has already reached a certain height and a certain age, you may not fell it on your own property without further ado. The Tree Protection Ordinance, which is valid in many municipalities, foresees a felling, and often even a pruning, only in the presence of good grounds and official approval. The secret cutting down of the tree, however, is not recommended: An infringement can result in drastic fines of up to EUR 100,000. For this reason, you better get the permit first and then grab the ax.
Drop the tree - That's how it works
Larger trees are best felled with the help of a chainsaw and appropriate protective clothing. Cut-resistant clothing, a helmet with a visor and safety gloves are essential and protect against injury to a certain extent. You will also need some energetic helpers and a thick rope. By the way, if you have no experience in using a chainsaw, you should better leave this task to someone who knows it. It is not without reason that a proof of capability is required for the operation of a chain saw! In addition, felling work may only be done on windless days. And that's how you fell the tree:
When the tree has fallen down, divide the trunk and crown into handy pieces that can either be dried and used as firewood or otherwise.
Rip the tree stump and remove it
If you also want to remove the tree stump along with the roots, let it stand about one to two meters from the trunk as a lever. Make the tree as described. Then dig a deep trench around the trunk that exposes the roots. Cover the roots with a sharp object and then use the trunk rest as a lever to loosen the rootstock. If enough body strength is not enough, a winch or a tractor helps.
Tips
Not always you have to remove the tree the same. Sometimes it is enough to cut back the crown and make the tree smaller.
