Protect the roots of your farmer's hydrangea with bark mulch from frost
Protect farm hydrangeas in winter
In cold regions and exposed locations, you can help your farmer hydrangea with some protection over the winter.
Flowering endangered by frost
Farm hydrangeas belong to the Hydrangea species, which bloom on the previous year's wood and form there already in the previous late summer the flower buds for the following year. At the same time this means that these flower buds are endangered by winter frosts and therefore need to be protected - even if the farmer's hydrangea itself is actually hardy. Otherwise the flower will fail in the following year.
Effective winter protection for farm hydrangeas
For a meaningful winter protection, carefully cover the plants in winter with bark mulch or leaves, with a thick and dry leaf filling providing the best protection. To do this, set up a frame made of wire mesh around the plant and pour plenty of leaves, which can also be mixed with straw, into it. Furthermore, you can wrap farmhouse hydrangeas with bast mats. Here, too, sprinkled leaves provide additional protection against the cold.
Tips & Tricks
Farmer hydrangeas cultivated in the bucket should not overwinter outdoors as the root ball freezes too quickly. It makes more sense to have a frost-free, but cool and bright wintering.
