Asters - in any case hardy or vulnerable?

Basically, no special winter protection for asters is necessary because they tolerate frost. Here the frost hardiness of the best-known species in a protected stand position:
When a hibernation makes sense
But there are also circumstances that make hibernation or winter protection meaningful. On the one hand, sensitive varieties should be equipped with winter protection. On the other hand, specimens cultivated in pots should be protected from frost in the root area.
Even if you live in a cooler / harsh region, such as in a mountainous area, on the coast or on a hillside, you should protect your asters in winter. In addition, asters should be protected during prolonged and heavy periods of frost.
Winter protection - what is suitable?
So that no frost can crawl to the root ball, you should protect your asters in the case of one of the reasons mentioned above. For example, a thick layer of:
Cut back only in the spring
Important: Do not cut back your asters in autumn! Although these perennials do not look like much winter with their bare stems and seeds, a fall cut is not recommended.
The stems and old leaves serve the plant as a natural winter protection. They should therefore not be removed. They not only protect against heavy frost, but also against wetness. In March, asters can then be safely cut down to the ground. In addition, these perennials can be shared in the spring, for example, with the aim of propagation.
Tips
Asters in the pot should be placed over winter on a protected house wall and additionally wrapped in the pot area with a fleece.
