Sow asters: step by step to the sea of flowers
With their star-shaped flowers, which can shine white, pink, red, purple or blue depending on the variety, they have already conquered the heart of many gardeners, the asters. Read below how to propagate them by sowing!
Pre-culture from February
From February you can pre-cultivate the aster seeds. The pre-cultivation from home is possible until April. But not only in the house is a suitable place for the preculture. Even outside on the balcony you can sow the seeds at mild temperatures.

From April, but better from mid-May, the seeds can also be applied directly in the field. There are also greenhouses or cold frames. The main thing is that it is light. Proceed similarly to the instructions on preculture. If the rain stops, irrigation is important so as not to interrupt the germination process.
It is important that you sow the seeds in a sunny spot. Asters are real sun worshipers.Also make sure you have a clear distance when sowing. At least half the growth width of the respective species or variety should be maintained.
Some aster species require a cold stimulus
There are also aster species that can not easily be pre-cultivated in the warm. Their seeds first need a cold stimulation (stratification). These include the species Aster alpinus, Aster novi-angliae and Aster belgiae.
Expose the seeds of these species to temperatures around 5 ° C for 4 to 8 weeks (for example in the fridge, in the winter on the balcony, ...). The temperatures are also allowed to be below 5 ° C. Only then are the seeds brought home in pots.
Tips
If asters are seeded at temperatures of around 10 ° C, they form into more vigorous plants. Too much heat limits their ability to grow partly.
