In Latin or botany, the sweetgum is called liquidambar. Translated, that means as much as 'liquid amber'. Furthermore, this plant is known under the name Seesternbaum and Storaxbaum. The Latin name refers to the sweet-smelling resin. It is used in the industry among others for the production of adhesives, oils, perfumes and incense.

Seen from afar, the Amberbaum falls by its considerable growth height of up to 20 m. In perfect locations and in exceptional cases, it can even grow up to 40 m high.
It has a continuous trunk and its crown is between 4 and 6 m wide. The gray-brown bark, which lays around the trunk, is provided with deep furrows. The branches, however, are yellow-green to light brown berindet.
The leaves are lobed like a hand and remind of the leaves of a maple. They are 10 to 18 cm long and just as wide. A long stalk gives them hold on the branches. In autumn, the foliage takes on magnificent hues of purple, yellow, orange, crimson or black-red.
