Further names and essentials
The bracken bears its name, as its fronds are reminiscent of the claws of an eagle. Furthermore, it is also known under the Latin name Pteridium aquilinum and under the name flea fern, bug fern and large forest fern.
This plant is perennial and hardy in this country. With its ambitious character, it has spread worldwide - except in the polar zones and desert areas. In Central Europe bracken is especially common. There he likes to stand in sparse forests, peat bogs, meadows and pastures.
A detailed look at the external appearance
In the soil is a large and branched rhizome. With it, bracken outlasts many decades, centuries or even more than a millennium at its location. In Finland, rhizomes 60 m in length were found, from which botanists concluded that the bracken was 1,500 years old.
With its slightly overhanging fronds, which emerge individually from the rhizome, the bracken is usually up to 2 m high. Rarer it rises up to 4 m high. He is considered the largest domestic fern. The fresh green fronds are long-stalked and three-pinnate.
Between July and October, the spores on the underside of the fronds mature. They are then spread by the wind. Although the bracken produces many spores, it prefers to multiply through its rhizomes.
