Transplanting cypress - What you need to consider
Like all conifers, the cypress does not like moving to a new location. You should only transplant cypress trees if they have not grown too long at their previous location. What you have to consider when transplanting.
Which cypresses you can still transplant
Cypress trees are fast growing and form a strong root network. The longer the tree stands in one location, the denser and longer the main roots become. They can hardly be excavated later without damaging them.
Therefore, only plant cypresses that have been in their old place for a maximum of four years. For older trees, you should refrain from transplanting, since you also need a small truck with winch to excavate the root ball with soil and transport.
With older trees and hedges, it is usually more sensible to plant a new cypress or create a new hedge.
The best time to transplant
If transplanting the cypress can not be avoided, wait until autumn. Then the soil is well moistened and there is no danger that it will dry out.
Prepare a sufficiently large planting hole. If necessary, fertilize the potting soil with some horn shavings or mature compost.
How to plant a cypress
Remove the lower branches so you can dig up the cypress better. When excavating, keep a distance of at least 50 centimeters to the trunk. For tall trees, the distance should be even greater.
For higher trees, place a support post next to the trunk so that the cypress grows as straight as possible.
Care after transplanting
After transplanting the cypress needs some time to get used to its location. Some needles turn brown.
The new site has to be watered regularly without causing waterlogging.
Tips
Cypresses tolerate neither dryness nor waterlogging. If you need to move the tree, make sure the soil is well drained at the new location. Otherwise, you should definitely create a drainage.
