Cypresses grow quickly, forming a dense hedge so quickly

Plant cypress as a screen

Cypress trees do not only look good as a single tree in the garden. The decorative conifers are also wonderful as a screen in front of the terrace or at the garden fence. So you pull up a cypress hedge to protect yourself from prying eyes.

A cypress shows a rapid growth. That's why it's easy to get a good view of the trees from the trees.

Sunny sheltered location preferred

Cypresses need a sunny or partially shaded location in a sheltered location. Too much wind cypresses do not like.

The soil must be permeable, nutritious and slightly acidic. Waterlogging does not tolerate the trees. They then turn brown and the privacy is quickly unsightly.

Choose the correct planting distance

If the privacy screen should be opaque as quickly as possible, plant the cypress trees at a distance of 30 centimeters. On a running meter come three trees. If you are not in such a hurry, two trees per meter, which you set at a distance of 40 to 50 centimeters.

Keep sufficient distance to neighboring properties. Depending on how high the screen is, the neighbors may feel disturbed. There are also regulations in each community that regulate planting distance to roads and other land.

Cypresses are flat-rooters that form a strong root system. Therefore, do not put the blinds too close to paved garden paths or terrace foundations.

Cut cypress regularly

Regular cutting of the cypresses is absolutely necessary. Only then does the tree drive out new side shoots. If the privacy is not cut, the trees will lose their grip over time and the hedge is no longer opaque.

Initially you should cut the cypress hedge twice a year, at least until it reaches the desired final height. Cut the trees before the hedge is high enough. Cut about a third of the annual growth for this purpose. A cypress grows in height between 40 and 70 centimeters per year.

Always cut cypresses from top to bottom using a clean pruner.

Tips

If possible, only buy trees that are already one meter high. These are more robust and not so frosty. The privacy screen will then close faster.
