The right location for your witch hazel
The witch hazel blooms most beautifully when it stands in a sunny and sheltered place, for example on a house wall. Then in winter it opens its colorful bizarre flowers and becomes an eye-catcher in every garden.
But even partial shade tolerates the witch hazel quite well. In very frosty temperatures, the petals curl, so it should be protected from the icy wind. If the root ball of the witch hazel dries too much, then it does not bloom. Protect a dry soil with a mulch layer from drying out.
What are the requirements of witch hazel?
Witch hazel is often considered to be easy to care for, but it places very high demands on the soil. Since it does not tolerate any waterlogging, the soil should be loose and permeable, also rich in nutrients and low in lime. Too solid ground loosen up with a little coarse sand or gravel.
In order to get nutrients into the soil, you can resort to organic fertilizers, such as horn shavings, ripened compost or well-rotted manure. If you need to cast the witch hazel during a prolonged dry period in summer, it is best to use rainwater because tap water often contains too much lime.
