If you are looking forward to a lush flowering in the summer, then you will be disappointed by the witch hazel - or rather surprised, because it blooms only in winter, usually from January, in a mild winter from December.
The flower color is delicate or bright yellow, orange or even red, depending on the variety that you have chosen. The four petals are long and narrow. They look a bit like colorful spiders. However, since the flowers grow in clumps, they offer a pretty sight. In addition, they smell pretty pleasant.
Does witch hazel need special care in the summer?
In a "typical northern German summer" with occasional rainfall, you do not have to worry about your witch hazel or care for it. She has everything she needs for good growth. If she is on a very poor soil, then she can tolerate a little organic fertilizer well. However, you should incorporate this already in the spring in the soil. A mulch layer protects the earth from drying out.
The early summer is a good time to increase the witch hazel by lowering. Choose a healthy and well-flexible long shoot. Partially free it from its leaves and cut it slightly for easier rooting on the bottom.
Now turn this part of the shoot to the ground and cover it with some soil. Fix the shoot with a tent peg or complain with a stone to keep it in the ground. It takes some time for roots to form. Only then may you separate the young plant from the mother plant and transplant it.
