Not all yuccas can be overwintered outdoors

Is it possible to overwinter the yucca palm outside?

There are many types of Yucca, some of which are even hardy, such as the Yucca filamentosa (filamentous palm) or the Yucca gloriosa (candle palm). Others, like the Yucca Palm Yucca (Yucca elephantipes), which is often mistakenly called yucca palm, come from warm regions and therefore tolerate absolutely no frost.

Room Yucca is not hardy

For this reason, the winter-hardy species can easily stay outdoors during the cold season, possibly with a slight winter protection. The cultivated as a houseplant Yucca elephantipes, however, tolerates temperatures in the higher single-digit range, but not at or even below zero. Therefore, you can put these plants quietly on the balcony or terrace during the warm summer months, but you should bring them to the house in good time.

Tips

The room yucca also needs a winter rest period with cool - about five to ten degrees Celsius - temperatures and in a bright location. As a result, the plant will probably even form flowers.
