Meadow flowers determine - That's how it works

Are you one of those people who like to roam through woods and meadows while discovering beautiful plants - and do not know how to differentiate native meadow plants? If you feel the same, buy yourself a good book that fits in your jacket pocket. On the basis of certain characteristics, the different meadow plants can be distinguished well from each other.

Determine forest and meadow plants by color

Of course, a first distinction is made according to the color of the flowers, which is one of the most obvious plant traits. For this reason, many design books are also built exactly according to this basic scheme. Meadow flowers can have very different, colorful flower colors: these can be red, blue, purple, yellow, green, white, purple or pink. In addition to the color of the flowers, the individual plants differ, of course, on the basis of their flower and leaf shape, their habitat, their type of propagation, etc. For some plants you have to look very carefully to identify individual species correctly - this may be dangerous, the yarrow is mistaken for the highly toxic giant barenklau.

Wild meadow flowers or released crops?

Many meadow flowers you know with certainty also from the domestic garden. Over the centuries, resourceful gardeners from the sometimes inconspicuous wildflowers developed very diverse and different-colored cultivars. However, you should take care to culture such cultivars, especially in rare and endangered wild plants (this includes, for example, the cowslip) auswildern. Such reintroduction usually only causes the wildflowers, which are already in distress, to be pushed back even more.

Endangered meadow flowers must not be removed from nature

A secure determination of the native meadow plants is especially important if you pick a bunch of flowers along the way or collect seeds for your own wild meadow. Rare and threatened wild meadow flowers may under no circumstances be picked or dug up. In contrast, it is usually no problem to collect the ripe seeds.

Tips & Tricks

Presumably there are several thousands of wild meadow flower species in Germany, which can be distinguished by their location, their flower color and shape and other characteristics. Unless they are protected species, you can take them home and plant them on their own meadow. The best thing, however, is to let the flowers themselves and instead only take the ripe seeds for sowing.
