The seeds of vetch
The vetch with its bright colors, ranging from different shades of blue over purple to white, is a typical cottage garden plant. It climbs to heights of up to two meters and grazes bare walls and fences within a very short time. Most vetches thrive once a year and can easily be harvested from self-collected or commercially purchased seeds.
Fruits and seeds
From the beautiful butterfly flowers the vetch forms legumes, which open in the course of maturation at the back and abdominal sutures. In each pod there are about eight seeds, which are not winged.
Harvest seeds yourself
If you cultivate vetches in your garden, you can collect the seeds yourself in the fall and sow them the following spring. It is important that the seed is fully harvested. The pod must already be opened by slight pressure and release the grains.
Dry and store seeds
Allow the seeds to dry on kitchen paper for a few days so that they do not rot or mold. After that, keep it in small paper bags until the next gardening season. Do not forget to label so that you do not confuse the wicking seeds with the seeds of other plants.
Sow vetches
In spring, you can sow the sturdy vetch directly at the planned location in the garden. In damp regions or in areas where late frosts are imminent, you should prefer the vetches in the house:
