The proper care of the frankincense plant
Cultivating frankincense is not particularly expensive. What you have to keep in mind when cultivating the popular ornamental plant for balcony and terrace. Note: This is the frankincense plant (Plectranthus), which should not be confused with the incense tree (Boswellia).
How do you properly water the frankincense plant?
The frankincense plant likes it slightly damp, but does not tolerate waterlogging. Water regularly, often penetrating, especially in plants that are kept hanging in the hanging basket.
Do not leave water in the coaster or planter.
Frankincense plants prefer soft, stale water. If possible, use rainwater for watering.
Do frankincense have to be fertilized?
The nutrient requirement is not very high. Freshly transplanted frankincense plants are not fertilized. Later, give normal liquid fertilizer every three to four weeks. However, fertilization is not necessary.
Are you allowed to cut an incense plant?
You can cut incense plants at any time. It is mainly shortened to long shoots. Avoid cutting directly into old wood in older plants.
Shortened shoots are very well suited for the propagation of the frankincense plant.
Is repotting necessary?
If you keep the frankincense plant for only one year, repotting is not necessary. In perennial plants is repotted when the incense plants are taken from the winter quarters. The old substrate should be replaced.
Are there any diseases and pests to watch out for?
The frankincense plant is very robust. Diseases are very rare. Even pest infestation is not common because of the strong inherent odor. Nevertheless, you should occasionally put the plants on
investigate. Infested plants should be treated or better disposed of immediately.
How is the frankincense plant overwintered?
The non-toxic incense plant is not hardy and must be wintered in the house frost-free. Place the planter in a bright place that is at least ten degrees high. During the winter, very little is poured and not fertilized.
After the winter break, the incense plant is slowly getting used to warmer temperatures and more light.
Tips
Incense plants are primarily grown on the balcony or terrace. The care as a houseplant is also possible, but is not necessarily recommended because of the strong smell.
