Most gardeners associate Enzian with large blue flowers. However, there are also gentian species that develop white and yellow inflorescences. Preference is given to cultivating the Blue Gentian, which is particularly comfortable in the rock garden.
The huge flowers of the Blue Gentian
In contrast to the flowers of white and yellow gentian varieties, the flowers of the Blue Gentian appear huge. They are bell-shaped and up to five inches long. They are often longer than the whole perennial, which is only ten centimeters high.
Due to their size and the barely visible stems, the blue color is particularly intense.
The flowering period of blue gentian usually begins in May, while other species develop flowers later.

The reason for the comparatively huge flowers of the Blue Gentian is due to its native location in the mountains. Here, the plants have to develop such showy flowers to be found and pollinated by the few insects.
