When is the best time to plant sunflowers?
Annual sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are not hardy and can not tolerate low temperatures at all. They have to be reseeded and planted every year. When is the best planting time to plant the popular summer flowers?
Sow first, then plant
Sunflowers are first sown. Sowing can be done in small pots or in a growing bowl in the house. But you can also sow the seeds directly in the field.
The disadvantage of field sowing is that it is not hot enough to germinate the seeds outside before the end of April.
It is therefore advisable to prefer sunflowers in the house and to plant them at the end of May in the garden or in tubs on the balcony.
Prefer sunflowers in the house
From the beginning of March, sowing in the house is possible.
Put three to five seeds into a seed hole, as not all seeds will usually grow. The nuclei germinate relatively quickly. Once the plantlets have developed two or more leaves, remove all the faint sunflowers and leave only the strongest ones. If necessary, transplant the sunflowers.
It has been proven to plant sunflower seeds as germinated sprouts. Otherwise, a larger part of the seed will be stolen by birds.
Sow in the open from the end of April
If you want to sow the sunflowers directly into the field, you should wait until the end of April. Prepare the soil and sow three to five grains each about two centimeters deep.
Extract preferred sunflowers at the end of May
Advance or pre-germinated sunflowers should not be planted outdoors before the end of May. Even a short frost break causes the tender little plants to freeze.
You may also plant sunflowers that you would like to care for in the bucket earlier. But bring the vessels back to the house when the weather forecast announces night frost.
Tips & Tricks
Perennial sunflowers, in contrast to the one-year varieties, are for the most part hardy. The best time to plant perennials is August. Sunflowers planted in late summer are already blooming next year.
