Lantana is a verbena plant with attractive umbellifers that is common in our parks. These change their color during the flowering period and brought the ornamental plant their German name. From September, they produce bright black fruits, which can pose a risk that should not be underestimated.

The toxins of the Wandelröschens, Lantadene and Triterpenester, are contained in all plant parts. However, the highest concentration is in the immature and ripe berries. The symptoms of poisoning are similar to those of poisoning with belladonna and are expressed as follows:

Lantana is poisonous to animals
Even domestic and farm animals such as cattle, sheep, dogs, cats and small rodents are endangered. The toxins have a phototoxic effect on them, that is, the poisoning is triggered by the interaction with the sun's rays. The symptoms are as follows:
Lantana is highly toxic to the animals. Cattle can die if consumed regularly by about 25 grams per kilogram of body weight within a week.
Tips
Since not only the lantana but also many other ornamental plants are poisonous, it is advisable to point out even small children on the danger of nibbling of unknown plants.
