Vexiernelke: Sowing in late summer

The Vexiernelke or crown-carnation is a two-year-old perennial that flowers mostly in the second year. It has beautiful, silvery gray and up to ten centimeters long leaves, which - like the stems - are woolly hairy. In July and August, the multi-branched clusters develop about three centimeters wide, usually pale purple to purple flowers. Propagation is by seed, seeded immediately after seed maturity or in spring.

The right time for sowing

The right time to seed self-collected seeds is the late summer or early fall. You recognize the seed maturity by simply pouring the seeds, which are very similar to poppy seeds, from the seed pod into a container - the capsule-like capsule has a circular hole at the top. Alternatively, however, a sowing in the spring - for example, with purchased seeds - possible.

Flowering only in the second year

However, whether you apply the seeds in the spring or in the autumn, the Vexiernelke will still bloom in the second year. In the first year, only a leaf rosette develops, although this also looks very different due to the silver-gray color. The shrub looks especially beautiful together with blue-violet-flowering and other gray-lipped perennials such as Santas (Santolina) or Felted Hornwort (Cerastium tomentosum). You need about four plants per square meter.

Sowing

As with all Nelkengewächsen sowing is also quite simple with the Vexiernelke:

Basically, you can save these operations but also, because the plant also readily expands itself. The sowing in the pot takes place in the same way as described.

Winterize the lynx outside

Lilies are considered frost hardy and can therefore hibernate outside without special protection. But beware: the otherwise easy to maintain plant tolerates absolutely no winter wet.

Tips

There are also Vexiernelken with differently colored blooms. The variety "Alba", for example, has white flowers, while "Blushing Bride" flowers white with pink eye.
