Make fresh dill last longer

The dill belongs to many recipes as a classic spice quite simply with it. Since freshly harvested dill does not last long at room temperature, there are several methods for preserving.

Make dill last longer with cold

As with most foods, chilly storage slows withering and loss of flavor in dill, too. In the fridge, fresh dill can be kept for a maximum of one to three weeks. In order to protect other foods from the relatively strong smell of dill, packing in a freezer bag or in a storage container is recommended in the refrigerator and when freezing dill. In the refrigerator, the whole dill tips can also be wrapped in a damp cloth, so they are kept even better fresh. For preservation in the freezer, the following options are available:

Drying in the air

Unfortunately, when you dry the dill harvested from the balcony or pot, its leaves lose some of their characteristic taste and smell. Nevertheless, drying can be an option for preserving dill, as it is also possible to separate the ripe dill seeds with little effort from the blossom umbels. To do this, hang the ripe flower umbels upside down in a dry place with sufficient air circulation. If you put clean paper bags or another container over the dill blossoms from below, the loose dill seeds automatically fall into place during the dry phase.

Process the dill into intermediates

In order to be able to preserve the dill in the longer term, it is also possible to process it into certain intermediates. Dillöl and Dillessig can be prepared with relatively little effort and can be used to refine a variety of recipes.

Tips & Tricks

For freezing, you do not necessarily have to chop filigree dill tips. You can also freeze them in the freezer compartment and then break them through the freezer bag with your hands and thus chop them up.
