Forget-me-not is hardy and can withstand strong frost

Forget-me-not is a native, hardy plant. It is used to cold winters and can easily withstand periods of heavy frost. Only with freshly planted perennials or the care in the pot winter protection is advisable.

The forget-me-not is hardy

Even heavy frost can not hurt the forget-me-not in the field. The popular spring flower is hardy and does not require any special winter protection. There are, however, a few exceptions where it makes sense to protect against frost.

When is winter protection necessary?

Forget-me-not is usually considered a biennial plant. Sowing takes place in the first year, followed by flowering in the second. The sowing should take place until July, so that the young forget-me-not can be planted out until the autumn.

If the perennial seeded too late, it can also be transplanted later. It does not have enough time to develop roots and foliage, and is not completely hardy.

In this case, you should protect the forget-me-not with a deciduous or awning cover from excessive frost in winter. A cover with fir branches is possible.

Forget-me-not in the pot over winter

If you forget about forget-me-nots in the bucket on the balcony or terrace, winter protection is always required. You can overwinter the pots in a frost-free but very cool place, for example in a cold greenhouse. A cellar is suitable if it is bright enough there. Hibernation in the warm room, however, is not possible.

If you do not have a greenhouse or there is not enough space in the basement, you can not forget forget-me-not outside. The forget-me-not survives the winter in the pot, if you protect it sufficiently from frost:

Place the pot in a sheltered corner on the balcony or patio. Make sure that the earth does not dry out completely. On frost-free days, you must pour the forget-me-not calm once.

Tips

Forget-me-not is an ideal child plant. It is easy to pull, blooms almost always and is also completely non-toxic.
