Are there different types of tulip trees?
The genus of tulip trees (botany liriodendron) includes only two species, namely the American and the Chinese tulip tree, which are very similar. There are also the related tulip magnolia and not related to the other African Tulip tree.
The name of the tulip trees is the shape of their flowers. It is reminiscent of the popular spring flower. In contrast, the colors are very different. While the tulip magnolia shows delicate pastel tones, the flowers of the African tulip tree are bright red.
The real tulip trees
The real tulip trees are often only the plants of the same genus counted, so the American and the Chinese tulip tree. Sometimes the African Tulip Tree is called genuine, but it belongs to the trumpet tree family, is not hardy and is ideal as a houseplant or for planting in the conservatory.
Both the Chinese and the American Tulip tree are suitable as garden plants. Both become very big and need a lot of space. They prefer a sunny location with nutrient-rich, rather acidic soil.
The Chinese tulip tree remains much smaller at about 18 meters in height and flowers in May. The heyday of the American Tulip Tree is from April to May. He can be about 30 to 40 meters high. Both trees shed their leaves in autumn, but are hardy. Because they have very sensitive roots, they should not be transplanted if possible.

The "false" tulip trees
As a "fake" tulip tree is actually called only the tulip magnolia. It is very common in native gardens. There it grows rather bushy and is about five to nine feet high. In spring, it shows its delicate flowers, which may be white, pink or light purple. With age grows not only the tree but also its abundance of flowers.
