Tulips are hardy - No flowering without cold
In each tulip bulb, the vitality rests for several years of cultivation in the bed and on the balcony, based on a robust winter hardiness. Cold is even essential for the bloom induction. No winter hardiness without the right planting depth
The trump card of their stable hardiness can play a tulip bulb only if it is deep enough to bottom. As part of the planting, you set the course for a healthy hibernation. How to do it right:
In clayey, firm soil, the planting depth should be 10-15 cm. Otherwise, the tulip in the spring costs too much energy to reach the surface and enchant us with its beauty.
Winter protection is recommended here
In the pot and balcony box, the vessel walls and the small substrate volume do not provide adequate protection against freezing frost. The move to the frost-free winter quarters is out of the question for tulips, as the flowers do not sprout without spring cold. So your tulips on the balcony are good for the cold season:
If your garden is in a region that is regularly hit by harsh winters, we also recommend taking some precautions for tulips in the garden. After planting in autumn, mulch with compost or spread a thick layer of leaves, fixed with brushwood.
Tips
Tulips benefit little from their winter hardiness when they lack the power to bud in spring. So that tulip bulbs can create an energy reserve after the flowering period, do not cut the foliage until the leaves have completely died. Until then, all remaining nutrients are relocated inside the flower bulb.
