Trumpet tree gets yellow leaves - what to do?
The trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) - not to be confused with the angel trumpet (Brugmansia) - is a medium-sized tree that is mainly cultivated for its white flowers and large, heart-shaped leaves. If the latter turn yellow, this is usually due to incorrect care.
Trumpet tree is sensitive to incorrect care
Catalpa is very sensitive to care problems or insufficient culture conditions. So yellow leaves are not uncommon if the tree is watered too rarely and / or fertilized. Also waterlogged or too shady location can make the trumpet tree hard to deal with.
Fungal diseases are rare but possible
Unfortunately, Catalpa bignonioides is also very sensitive to Verticillium wilting, which occurs especially in very humid-humid weather (for example, in very rainy summers) as well as waterlogged. This fungal disease can not be treated by fungicides, but only symptomatically. For this, the affected parts of the plant must be cut back far into the healthy wood and carefully removed.
Tips
Verticillium wilt manifests itself in the fact that the tree gradually withers or dies within a few days or weeks. The yellow leaves first show up on one branch and only later in other places.
