Trumpet tree: flowering time in summer

The fast-growing, medium-sized ordinary trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) originally comes from the warm and sunny regions of southeastern North America and has been planted here in Germany for several years. The woodland grows up to ten meters wide and is mainly cultivated because of its imposing, heart-shaped leaves and summery flowers.

Trumpet tree shows flowers splendor between June and July

The white, bell-shaped flowers of the trumpet tree are arranged in upright panicles and show their full beauty in the months of June and July. The hermaphrodite flowers exude a light scent that attracts numerous insects - especially bees - which is why the deciduous tree is also known as bee pasture. From this develop bean-like, up to 35 inches long and slightly poisonous fruits.

Not every trumpet tree is blooming

However, not every variety of the trumpet tree tends to bloom. For example, the ball-trumpet tree (especially the variety "Nana") blooms only very rarely or in older age. Also the blood trumpet tree (Catalpa erubescens Purpurea) as well as the gold trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides Aurea) show their flowers at the earliest from the fifth or the sixth year of existence.

Tips

Especially young trees should preferably be supplied with organic fertilizer (compost or horn shavings) to promote growth and thus sprouting.
