Plate Hydrangeas usually hardy
Plate hydrangeas have a much higher frost hardness than the farmer hydrangea, which gives you an advantage especially in winter cold regions advantage. Nevertheless, the shrubs should stand in a sheltered location and be provided with a suitable winter protection.
In the garden planted plate hydrangeas overwinter
For garden-grown plate hydrangeas, the older the plant, the less susceptible it is to frost. Young plate hydrangeas (especially in the first two years) should better still leave in the pot or excavate in the fall and overwinter under cold conditions. Older specimens are vigorously mulched, for which you can very well use straw, leaves and / or compost as well as brushwood or fir branches. Especially at low temperatures and long periods of frost, however, it is important to protect the flower buds from freezing. Otherwise, the flower will simply fail in the following year.
Protection by leaves
Good protection is offered by a thick, dry leaves. It's best to set up a frame of chicken wire around the plant and pour straw mixed leaves into it. The wire mesh prevents the foliage from being blown away by it. In addition, you can cover the shrubs with bast mats, and here also in between spilled leaves provide additional protection against the cold. The winter protection is removed as soon as the ground is no longer frozen in the spring.
Correct plate hydrangeas in the bucket
Plate Hydrangeas cultivated in a bucket of less than 40 to 50 centimeters should not have to spend the winter outdoors. Instead, they are overwintered under cold conditions - that is, frost-free, cool, and bright - in the home, apartment, or greenhouse. If you do not have a light space available, the plant can in case of need also in the dark cellar - provided that they are sufficiently supplied with light by a plant lamp. Larger bucket can stand outside, but should be protected from the cold with mats, fleece or similar.
Tips & Tricks
The hydromorph varieties "Hydrangea serrata var. Koreana", which has excellent winter hardiness at a protected location without direct sun, and the rosy-flowered breeding "Veerle" are considered particularly hardy. The latter also impresses with a strong autumn color.
