Pond liner for a raised bed - what is suitable?

Raised beds are often more complicated than it looks at first glance. Especially the climate inside you should regulate very precisely. What significance pond liners have for raised beds, and which foils are best suited, read in our article.

Climate in the raised bed

Raised beds are surrounded by a variety of materials - from concrete blocks to natural stone to wood sheathing. Each of these materials suffers to varying degrees when it comes into contact with moist soil.

Conversely, the climate in a raised bed should always be slightly damp. The moisture in the soil should not escape as much as possible, so that plants in the interior of the raised bed also thrive well.

Lining with foil

A foil lining protects in the raised bed, especially the sheathing. Despite wood preservation, wood, which has constant contact with moist soil, is attacked over time.

There is no wood preservation that could really prevent it - with the exception of today's banned, highly toxic tar products like Carbolineum. But nobody wants to use something like this in their garden.

The lining of the raised bed with foil protects the border of the bed very effectively against the persistent moisture and at the same time preserves the moisture necessary for the plants inside.

A suitable foil must have the following properties:

In view of these properties, EPDM film is most likely to be considered. PVC films age relatively quickly and lose their plasticizers. This makes them brittle and leaking with time.

In addition, PVC films are also far less resilient than EPDM films - especially at lower temperatures they quickly lose their flexibility. And as ecologically harmless and suitable for plants you can see PVC film under any circumstances.

The difference in cost between PVC films and EPDM films is usually not significant given the small amount needed for a raised bed. Although PVC films are also being offered for this purpose, EPDM films are clearly the better choice as they are completely environmentally neutral.
