Clean the pond filter - this is how it works

Pond filters provide clear water where nature can not do it anymore. However, pond filters are not as easy to maintain as the microorganisms in nature: they need a bit of maintenance and cleaning. How to do it right, read our article.

Need for cleaning

Pond filters must also be cleaned during operation. This is not a difficult task in general, but above all else regular and ongoing happen.

A little more effort is needed when the filter goes into winter operation. At this point you will need to take some additional measures.

Especially when buying the filter system, make sure that the pond filter is sufficiently dimensioned. Systems that are slightly oversized, and designed for a slightly larger amount of water than the pond actually has, are in terms of cleaning in any case more advantageous than small-sized systems. These cause a high maintenance.

Basic cleaning

Many filter systems have a control indicator that indicates when a filter needs to be cleaned. You should always follow this message, and only clean it when the device actually requires it.

Filter cleaning for filters with UVC system

The easiest to clean are usually UVC systems. There is a "cleaning mode", which you can easily activate with a lever or switch. For other devices, you only need to turn off the UVC lamp.

After that you can simply push out the filter sponges and express thoroughly. Never rinse them out during the current season, as you will otherwise disturb the filter balance.

You can then also revive the filter bacteria with certain additional agents - during the exposure time (often several days), the lamp must then remain off. But that is not necessarily necessary with every cleaning.

After expressing the filter sponges, you can simply restart the system. The pump usually continues to run undisturbed during the entire cleaning process.

During the winter you usually have to remove and replace the lamp and rinse the filter sponges. If you want to put the system back into operation in the spring, everything will be assembled again.

Tips

Be sure to read and understand the operating instructions before installing the filter. Operating errors can severely disturb the filter balance and thus significantly reduce system performance.
